If we invite author’s into our classrooms, they can become personal coaches for our students. I will introduce the book Outliers to my students with this CNN interview between Anderson Cooper and Malcolm Gladwell.
First of all, Gladwell’s an interesting looking character that’s for sure, and really, who wouldn’t want to read a book by a guy who is so interesting AND articulate?

Three Teachers Talk 
I am so with you here, Mother of All Readers! I am an instructional facilitator on my campus, and we have many new teachers this year. Most are drowning. One new teacher I’ve been assigned to mentor landed in the worst possible position. He is team teaching an English/Geography class, but his team teacher is ill. She has to be out often for treatments and then also is often too sick to work. The subs that rotate in and out his door are MANY. Even when she is there, she is not always “there,” and my new teacher has to pick up the slack–but he doesn’t know how. And sadly, he hasn’t even had a chance to learn. My new goal with him: let’s work on having ONE really great experience. We’re five weeks into the school year; how sad is that?

I would definately agree about his assessment of how long it takes to get to “mastery”. I feel like that holds true in the teaching profession. I don’t know why we expect teachers to reach mastery in the first year – allowing time and space in the day for teachers to work on their craft is so important – and missing in the structure of a traditional teacher’s day.
