‘Tis the season to give gifts, yes?
Well, in the spirit of our upcoming days off from school, Three Teachers would like to spread a little holiday cheer. 
After the honor of presenting with the incomparable Tom Newkirk at #NCTE17, we are giving away a signed copy of his incredible book, Minds Made for Stories.
There are five ways to enter the giveaway:

Good morning! Amy Michael, reading specialist Grades 4-9, Augusta County VA! Older students are creating a “next” list as part of final exam to keep that momentum going. The younger students have a hot chocolate challenge from TPT More Than a Worksheet to encourage reading with relatives and friends over Christmas.

I teach English 11 and AP Lang at Montgomery Catholic Preparatory School in Montgomery, AL. I’m challenging my students to read something new over the Break. I have asked them each to come back to school with a book to book talk and a poem to share. 😊

Hi, there! Sarah Loftis, New Buffalo Middle School Grades 7-8 in New Buffalo, MI. My students are taking multiple books home with them when break starts. Next week is all about finding a handful that they will take home with them. I have given them the challenge of reading more books than me over break!

Hi, Three Teachers! I enjoyed your presentation at NCTE and have found your posts here motivating. My name is Derek Rowley, and I teach English III and AP Lit and Comp at Maplewood Richmond Heights High School in St. Louis, MO. I am hoping to keep students reading over the holiday break primarily by offering them individual choice in what they read, by giving them the opportunity to discuss what they are reading, and by getting them into this choice book before break. We are wrapping up a War in Literature unit, and students just finished reading Tim O’Brien’s The Things They Carried. Now they are reading a book of their choice, most of which have some war element or a theme related to TTTC. One big group is reading Slaughterhouse Five, and there have been lots of spontaneous “what the heck is going on” conversations among students. They needed to confirm with each other that they weren’t missing anything and that the book wasn’t necessarily supposed to make sense right away. Other titles my students are reading include The Journal of Patrick Seamus Flaherty by Ellen Emerson White, A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne, Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank, All The Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr, Inside out and Back Again by Thanhha Lai, If I Die in a Combat Zone, Pack Me Up and Ship Me Home by Tim O’Brien, Night by Elie Wiesel, and the Book of Genesis. I am reading Jacqueline Woodson’s Another Brooklyn (not war related). Happy reading!

I am from Evanston Township High School. Evanston, IL. My 9th and 12th graders will return to our library for our once a month to renew or to get a new book; they read independently throughout the year but vacation is a great time to relish in a good book so choice is critical (as Penny Kittle says – it’s not the time, it’s the book!) We will share out our vacation plans and articulate when we will carve out time to read. Students will be given free homework passes if they complete a book over break. We will also produce a Padlet of best reads for the recent quarter to share within our reading community. This will serve as ‘recommendation go to’. I will also model my reading choices and plans for the vacation. Can’t wait!

I was doing some reflection this weekend in my notebook and wrote, “I will FLOOD them with book talks in these last two weeks before break.” And as much as I hate to attach a grade to reading, I will ask them to fill out a reading log with pages read over break.

Students will receive prompts to respond to on GOOGLE classroom based on their independent book of choice throughout the break. Students can receive a raffle ticket when they return for each journal entry they wrote/share about their reading. Raffle will include choice of hmwk tickets, read all period tickets, write all period tickets, paperbacks and $ 5 Dunkin Donut cards(everyone who participates will win something). Anyone who finishes a book over vacation has option to present a book talk and gain 5 points on midterm.

Hi, Book giveaway? Surely. Pam Bowe, Chippewa Falls High School 9-12, Chippewa Falls, WI . I already have it scheduled with our librarian to take my ninth graders to the library next week before break in order to do “speed dating” with books so kids can leave with several book “dates” to keep excited about reading over break.
