I’ve been really delighted this summer to see a great deal of teacher engagement in a variety of places. From the participants in my National Writing Project summer institute, to the enthusiastic readers in the Book Love Summer Book Club, to the still-hashtagging tweeters on various ed chats, I love seeing so many teachers interested in refining their practice outside the school year.
I’m especially thankful for you, our thoughtful readers, for continuing to read and comment and engage with us in the summertime. I love that you’re on this journey with us as teacher-writers, constantly reflecting on our practice, striving to improve it.

Three Teachers Talk 
Since there are many hours of grading, many piles of books to be read, many students to counsel, many projects to be hung to ceiling tiles, many parents to inform, and many a chill pill and breath to be taken, I appreciate the zeal and grit of teachers; moreover, there is a perspicacious, judicious astuteness that I highly respect when it comes to educators–I know that my fellow co-hearts will not only value our combined efforts, but will also place the same amount of work in the task as I do. I love our group of incisive, sagacious ELA educators!

I wanted to say thank you (again)! I received the books today. As ecstatic as I was to receive these books, the box alone ended up opening up a discussion about different books. It turns out that the person that handed me the package reads even more than I do and leaves finished books around the world for others to enjoy. I love that books are the gateway into other worlds within and outside of the actual pages.

I am thankful for teachers who share in my lifelong love of learning and teaching! I am thankful for teachers who are willing to share ideas and resources to instill a love of reading and writing in our students and ignite the passion that they didn’t know they had in them. 🙂 I am so excited to change the course of my teaching this year through reading and writing workshops. My Kelly Gallagher and Penny Kittle books are all post-it noted and highlighted. I am getting ready to read both of the Notice and Note books and am intrigued by the idea of using signposts.

I’m thankful for teachers because of their generous hearts. They share knowledge, ideas, and resources. They share love and laughter. I get some of my best teaching ideas from teachers who are willing to share. #teachersrock for sure!

I am thankful for teachers because it is evident year after year that we all have the same goal in mind: the success of our students. We may teach different preps, we may have different experiences, and we may have different philosophies and teaching styles, but we all rally for the common good of our students. And as a mom to a new baby boy, I am even more grateful for the plethora of adults who will affect his life as his educators. I know he will encounter many influential people in his life, but I am certain some of the most influential will be his teachers. And what a beautiful thing that is!
I am especially thankful that I had the opportunity to attend a workshop training with Amy and Lisa last week. My experience prior to joining my new district is not centered on student choice when it comes to reading, and to be frank, I was a bit intimidated by the workshop model. After just two days of training, though, I am extremely confident as I move to this teaching philosophy, and I cannot wait to see how it transforms my students’ reading and writing and how it gives them the confidence I know they possess.

I’m so thankful for teachers who work on both their content and their relationships with students. Luckily for me, independent reading allows teachers to do both! Getting the opportunity to know kids through the books they choose (and their engagement with them) is something I owe to this website, and to Penny Kittle and Nancie Atwell. Thank you all for giving me an amazing two years of Reading/Writing Workshop in my classroom. Please keep up the great posts!

I love teachers who never stop learning themselves, so that we can find more ways to reach as many students as possible! I’ve just spend two days getting “oriented” to a new district and have such a wonderful, positive and hopeful feeling. It’s great!

I am thankful for the teachers who aided me not only as fellow colleagues, but became my family as well. I am still new to teaching, with two years of experience. I’ve worked in a rural district in Texas during that time. In a school where turnover rates are high and the students have struggled to open up out of fear of being left again, I have learned to truly rely on others and share my insights at the same time. I am thankful that we all have a voice to share in the teaching community and that we are always striving to make each other better so that we can make the students we serve better. I am thankful to be a teacher, I am thankful for the teachers who have helped me to become the person I am today, and I am thankful for the teachers that will come. Never lose your light, and never give up your passion. We touch so many lives without ever realizing it!!

Like most, I am thankful for teachers who encouraged me…Who didn’t pretend I wasn’t there. I think we all may have been in those shoes too. Yet, what I’m most thankful for are the teachers who are in my life today. The encouragers. The risk takers. The positive souls. I couldn’t have known known it when I was an adolescent, but the things which moved me THEN, move me NOW. I’m thankful to be teaching with a generation of beta here who aren’t afraid to be curious, generous, and open. To steal and repurpose a line from “As Good as It Gets”…You make me want to be a better man.

I love my students and the school where I work. I have been teaching for 45 years and am still excited every year to return. But it is the teaching community that helps me grow and shows me the straight path when I get lost. It was Amy Rasmussen who bolstered me when my AP scores went down. It was my teammate who challenges me every day. It was a second year teacher who jumped in when I recently broke my foot. They are the ones who help me grow and are the inspiring and inspirers. I am thankful for teachers because we do sometimes thankless work for miminal pay and wake up everyday with a smile and excited to see our kids. I am thankful for teachers because we have the mind of a innovator and a hear for seeing students become the best they can be!

I’m so thankful for teachers who help me grow as a teacher, who have helped me grow as a human being, and who have and continue to help my own children grow. Teachers have the greatest impact (pos/neg) on students aside from friends and parents. I am so thankful to find teachers (in person on in my PLN) that are working to inspire students and help students discover themselves @dk_finley

I am so thankful for teachers that continuously tap into the humanity, personality, and talents students have. I was fortunate enough to have a couple teachers who saw me as a person and I strive to make that same connection with each of mine. I can’t even imagine the person I would be if it had not been for the influence and friendship of those teachers. The work teachers do is too critical, too impactful beyond the school doors, to only teach academics.

Today, I’m grateful for the teachers in my training who are always trying to get 5% better, as Kelly Gallagher suggested we do. Who question and wonder and revise, all with their students in mind. And every day, I’m thankful for my English department, my peers and friends who are my first and best teachers, and who challenge my thinking and make me laugh – A LOT – and who love kids. Always.

I’m thankful for the teachers that have let me guide me them through rethinking their curriculum decisions, and trusting that workshop will change their practice and their students lives forever. My journey as an Instructional coach will be ending because I want to get back to the classroom, so I’m also grateful for opportunities of paying it forward, in regards to books. I left my classroom library in good hands, but now need to build another one.

One of my students just recently left in her exit reflection that she’s grateful that I “let [her] discover [her] own purpose for writing and being.” That’s what we do, and for that I’m thankful. #teachersrock
